A Real Solution for Roatán’s Animal Crisis
Ending the cycle of overpopulation requires more than response—it requires a plan.
ROAR Mobile is building a mobile veterinary unit designed to work community by community,
reaching enough animals in each area to create lasting change.
This approach is based on proven field models used around the world and is being developed with guidance from Worldwide Veterinary Service and Mission Rabies.
The Problem Isn’t Compassion—It’s Access
We all see it—on our streets and in our neighborhoods.
Animals suffer not because people don’t care, but because care isn’t within reach.
Veterinary services are limited
Sterilization is inconsistent
Small issues become long-term suffering
This affects not just animals, but the health and well-being of our entire community.
Why the Problem Persists
Roatán has hosted clinics for years—so why hasn’t the population declined?
These clinics provide important care and prevent many litters. But a decrease in population depends on reaching a high percentage of animals within the same area, within a short period of time.
When services are spread across different locations, each area can still have enough unsterilized animals to continue reproducing. Dogs and cats can have multiple litters each year, and even a small number of intact animals can maintain the population.
Animals also move between neighborhoods, meaning new, unsterilized animals can enter areas that have already received services and continue the cycle. This is often referred to as the “vacuum effect.”
As a result, progress is made—but overall numbers tend to remain steady.
This is a well-documented challenge in population management.
You can learn more about how this works on our Strategy page.
The Solution: ROAR Mobile
ROAR Mobile is a mobile veterinary program designed to apply a clear, structured plan to animal welfare on Roatán.
Instead of scattered services, we:
• focus on one community at a time
• reach a high percentage of animals in that area
• track progress as we go
How It Works
We focus on one community at a time.
We stay until we reach meaningful sterilization coverage.
Then we move to the next.
Programs using this approach have shown significant reduction over time when coverage is consistent.
